Puppy Supply Checklists!

Here, by category, are some of my recommended purchases for adding a Havanese puppy to your household. Don’t worry! You don’t need to buy all of these today. Start with the Basics and some Grooming Tools and then you can add other items you need over time.

To make things easy, these are links to Amazon pages, but you can find these supplies at many other sources, including direct from the manufacturer’s website. I get a small commission from these links, but they are all items I use and/or recommend, not advertisements. That being said, sometimes Amazon changes things on the back end, so double check things like measurements before you buy!

Grooming Supplies for Small Breed, Long-Haired Puppies

This list is for pet puppies who will have short- to medium-length hair as an adult. If you’re interested in what I use for show dogs, please reach out and ask!

That’s really all you need for a puppy! If you are keeping your adult dog in a pet trim more than 1-2”, you may also benefit from some additional items:

Safe Car Travel for Small Dogs

A dog in a car accident is a projectile - they can easily be hurt or killed hitting a seat or going through your windshield. Most car harnesses or “car seats” will help the dog be less distracting for you, but will do nothing in a crash. Any crate is better than riding loose! And here are my two favorite crash-tested options:

  • SleepyPod is basically a bed that attaches into a three-point seatbelt. I use this a lot for puppies and adult dogs!

  • Ruffland kennels are one-piece molded crates that are a world better than the flimsy plastic crates they sell at pet stores. They have lots of fun colors and cool accessories. Most Havanese will use a Mini or Small size.

Other Helpful Small Dog Supplies

While these often aren’t needed for puppies, I often get asked for recommendations for all sorts of things. Here’s a list that is basically Narwyn’s Favorite Things!

Air Travel Bags for Small Dogs

You will always need to check the dimensions and requirements for your specific airlines, but my three favorite underseat bags are:

Natural Flea & Tick Solutions

If you are in an area with many fleas, ticks, or mosquitoes, you should speak with your vet about flea and tick medication options. I personally give Heartgard and Nexgard; many of my puppy owners have luck with Simparica Trio. Remember that while all medications have some potential side effects and risks, there are many diseases carried by fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes that can make your pet very ill or worse. So as with anything else, you need to weigh the risks and benefits for your area and lifestyle.

I’ve found these items can help in areas of low pest activity or in conjunction with medications. For example, I still treat my yard with Wondercide, even though my dogs take Nexgard, because I still don’t want to find ticks on myself!

  • Wondercide Yard Treatment, which is made from cedar oil. It must be applied as directed and as often as directed or it will not work!

  • Wondercide Topical Spray for you and your dogs if you are going on a hike or walk and need short-term protection.

  • Artero Bye Bye shampoo, ideal for after a hike or walk to wash away pests

  • Bug Off Garlic, which is fed and helps make pets less attractive to pests. Don’t worry, you are feeding a tiny amount and it will not cause issues for most dogs.
